Mechanism automatically determines the coefficient of friction between the block and tray. It works by tilting the tray until the block just starts to slide. The coefficient of friction then equals the tangent of the tray angle.

If the coefficient of friction of the tray and block differ, then Algodoo uses a special formula to determine the combined coefficient of friction. I figured out what that equation is. If you think you know, then post your guess below. The winner will get an all expense paid trip to anywhere in the world, so be sure to list your desired destination with your guess.

tan{theta} = µs
Theta is the angle from vertical and µs is the static coefficient of friction between the objects.

England looks like a fun place to visit.
You may have not understood the question. The question is:

How does Algodoo calculate the coefficient of friction when the coefficient of one material is different from the other?

For example, if the block has µ = 0.123 and the tray has µ = 0.456, then how does Algodoo calculate the combined COF (0.237)?

Also, in your statement above, theta should be the angle from the horizontal, not vertical.

"You may have not understood the question."

Damn! My wife says that to me every day! :lol:

I'll have to do some digging to find the answer you are looking for.

Well, I had to clean out a few cobwebs in my memory bank to find it, but if memory serves me, you find the coefficient of friction between two surfaces where one of the surfaces is a ramp, by dividing the height of the ramp by its length at the point where the object just begins to slide. So, the equation would simply be Cf = h/l. I don't know if that's how Algodoo calculates it, but that is one way to do it. Did I get this right or did I totally miss the boat again?
I think you totally missed the boat. Your latest statement is equivalent to your first statement. Although both statements are true, I don't believe either answers the question. I would think the formula would be in the form of:

u = f(u1,u2)

where

u = combined coefficient of friction
u1 = COF of one material
u2 = COF of other material
Oy Vey! I give up! :lol:
I figured that nobody would get it. That is why I offered such a large prize. I'll end the contest now, just in case somebody does figure it out.
u = (u1 * u2)^0.5
