Convection Cell. Red is hot. Blue is cold. Let it run for a while and it will set up its own convection current.

It works just like a real liquid in a heated container. Nice job!
very cool
Something that I noticed now that I did not notice back in 2012 when you posted this scene is the following:

While clusters of particles are revolving around the container, occasionally a small number (maybe 1 or 2) particles will manage to rotate around as many as 3 or 4 times without making contact with any of the surfaces. The way that you programmed this scene, it appears that particles must collide with the surfaces of the container in order for the transfer of heat to occur (aka, conduction). In real life, particles would also transfer heat through convection within the liquid. I don't see that happening here.

Am I correct about how the scene works, or did I miss something?

There is heat transfer between particles. The amount of heat transfer is determined by 'e.this._bForce = a + 0.05 * (b - a)' in the particle onCollide event. I've changed the equation to 'e.this._bForce = a + 0.25 * (b - a)' for faster heat transfer between particles.
I don't know if the math is correct (but judging by your many other scenes it probably IS correct) I would say that the scene "seems" more natural now. Again, nice job!
Thanks.
Yes, it is much better!
Thanks to feedback from Xray and ideas from your scene.
