Probably new concept. Bomb spawns bunch of high friction and high attraction boxes that spawn pens when rapidly randomly colliding.
Lags only when zoomed in.

Minor issue - explosion sometimes leaves some pens on nearby objects.

In phun some things are harder or impossible to do, but this one could be possible.
How does the blast wave? It is a wave of environmental substances. It can be air, metal and soil. The strength of the shock wave and the change of state of matter of the environment (pressure, density, temperature) depends on the strength of the explosion and the substance in which the wave passes. The speed of the shock wave also varies, but conventional military bombs and explosives, this rate is roughly equal to the Mach number or more of it. The air density can reach liquefaction point, which is approximately at -192 degrees celsius 960 kg / m Thus it is possible to simulate blast wave moving at the speed of sound ordinary ball enormous density. But the way of Davidz still good - good effects. ;)
you might want to assign geomids to the objects and bind the tracer to that geomid
Some thoughts about Celler's post: military-grade explosives have detonation velocity of up to 8000m/s - about Mach 25.
Liquification point can be reached in high temperatures, with enormous pressures.
Additional visible effect is water vapor cloud. It's created in low pressure area behing shockwave, where water in air condenses.
