The Boeing 747 crash near New York City was a major aviation accident that occurred on Wednesday, July 17, 1996. The Boeing 747-131, operated by Trans World Airlines (TWA), was operating scheduled intercontinental flight TWA800 from New York to Paris and Rome when it exploded 12 minutes after takeoff and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean 13 kilometers (8 mi) from East Moriches, New York, USA. All 230 people on board—212 passengers and 18 crew members—were killed.
