Red particles represent food, purple represents a passive creature.
Particles move around randomly. When the creature bumps into food, it eats the food and grows. When it hits a second one, it returns to its original size and reproduces.
After a long enough time of not obtaining food, the creature dies and drops its amount of energy as food again. This produces an infinite circle of life, like in the real world.
Scene had a weird side effect of making more particles than that which would maintain equillibrium, fixed it now

Maybe the creatures should get weaker and smaller over time when they do not consume food. When they get below a certain minimum level of weakness, they die. There are a lot of other interesting things you can do with this!
Done and done! Particles are born and die for as long as there are living particles!
The creatures turn into food when they die! I didn't think of that but it makes sense. :tup:

The only issue I see which is probably different from real life is the fact of entropy. These creatures must gain and use energy from the food they consume, and that energy doesn't remain in this closed system. So they must get renewed energy from some outside source (like the Sun?). If not, then the entire system will die over time as all the energy gets converted to heat.

Personally I like this system, it's kind of poetic in a way, the fact that it sustains itself without the need for an outside energy source.
