I wasn't certain how an object's material velocity actually works and so I made this little test scene. The test shows that the material velocity affects the motion of the entire outer edge (perimeter) of objects.

The rotating circles are driven only by friction between the circles and the outer edges of the objects shown. The axles are idlers which do not generate any rotation of their own.

UPDATE: Added a "belt" (actually an Algodoo ROPE) around two large circles which drive the belt either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on the polarity of the Material Velocity value of the two circles. The belt can be thought of as a treadmill belt, or a belt sander belt, or a band saw blade. The point is the belt is being driven around only by the circle's outer edges.

what is material velocity? Is it just vel or is it something completely different?

vel is how fast the entire geometry moves (x and y) through Algodoo space. Material velocity is how fast the outside edge of the geometry moves and in which direction in relation to the body of the geometry.
