Start the simulation. Carefully move (press m to select move-tool) the negative orange staff with its yellow gate to the green gate of the neutral electroscope (same number of (blue) negative electrons and (red) positive atoms). Keep the staff in that position (keep the left mouse-button pressed at your endposition) for 2 or 3 minutes and watch how the electrons from the staff enter the electroscope and how the "right blue leg" is turned by repulsion of the electrons.
If you move the staff too rapidly, the electrons will jump off the staff even without electrical contact, which is equivalent to heating the staff a lot, so move it slowly. You can also drag the staff with the "d"-key to prevent this heating-effect.

Another thing that would help to not lose electrons from the staff is to increase the simulation frequency. The default is 60Hz. Solid objects become less "porous" when you increase it to about 200Hz. For those who do not know, click on "Options" (next to the File tab in the upper-left corner), and then click on "Simulation". You can move the slider or simply enter a value of 200. That will help when the Drag tool is used, but will do little to help with the Move tool. |
